Disconnect utilities ( gas, electric, water), oil or propane deliveries, phone services, cable, trash, sewer district  & security systems; pay accounts in full
  Cancel pre-authorized bill payments
  File a change of address form and have mail forwarded. This can be done online at http://www.usps.com/
  Stop or forward newspapers, magazines and all home deliveries.
  Transfer or obtain medical and dental records
  Start clearing your home of  items that you will not be taking along.  Items can be donated to the local thrift shop.   Make sure to get a receipt  for tax purposes
Insurance & Legal
  Sign all documents needed to close on your home(s)
  Obtain new homeowners insurance or transfer your current insurance to your new home.  Make sure that your current home is covered until after closing. Now is a good time to review your coverage
Make sure that your mover’s insurance policy is sufficient.  If not obtain additional insurance
  Give written notice (usually 30 days) to your landlord if you are renting
  Round up all of your house keys to take with you to closing
Moving and Packing
  If you are taking appliances, have them serviced for the trip
  Make arrangements for moving plants (moving companies cannot transport plants) and pets if they are not to be taken along with you.
  Pick up personal items from the dry cleaner, photo processing lab, storage, pharmacy
  Most mover’s will not take along propane grill tanks even if emptied so make arrangements if plan to take them along or give them to a "needy" neighbor
  Take an inventory of items that you are moving ... use the handy forms provided by your mover
  Have your car serviced
  You’ll need cash for traveling expenses
  Make sure to tell a relative or friend about your travel plans (route)
  Notify your mortgage company, insurance agencies and any established business accounts
  Change the address on your drivers license
  Change the billing address for your credit cards
  Leave security system directions and codes for the new owners
  Fill all of your prescriptions before you leave

  Medical & dental records
  Valuables such as furs, jewelry, coin or stamp collections, irreplaceable photos, software
  Arrival box containing the following necessary items since your belongings may take some time to arrive:
 
  • Telephone
  • Paper towels, trash bags, paper cups, plastic cutlery, pitcher, snacks
  • Cleaning items, sponge, powdered detergent, scouring pads
  • Toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant
  • Towels & wash cloths, facial tissues, hand lotion, bar soap
  • Light bulbs, hammer, screw driver, pliers, assorted nails & screws
  • Toys, books & puzzles to keep the children occupied
